"Violin Companion" by Gianluca La Villa

On the 2nd October I was the guest of Professor Gianluca La Villa at the launch of his book "Violin Companion" in Ferrara. This was a multiple event, commencing with a concert by the brilliant young American violinist Misha Keylin. Misha Keylin played Vieuxtemps Violin Concerto #2 and Saint-Seans Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso. After the concert there was a presentation when Gianluca's book was officially launched. There were several speakers who were all agreed that the book will to be a valuable reference for lovers of the violin who are not necessarily trained as violinists. The book also affords a good overview of the major violin repertoire and will most certainly introduce new works to its readers. Later that evening there was a celebratory dinner with a great many distinguished visitors from various countries together with Italy's distinguished violin maker Roberto Regazzi of Bologna who was also present.

The following list of the book's chapters clearly indicates the repertoire covered by the book. Each chapter contains references to works by the composers and the authors recommended recordings past and present. Like all lovers of the violin Gianluca has his own personal heros, who it must be said were Titans of the violin during their alloted time in the violin world.

1. The Soloist, 2. Technique and Concert Programme, 3. Starting with Kreisler, 4. Sound and Strings, 5, The First Notes, 6. Mendelssohn, 7. Brahms, 8. The "Cadenza", 9. Beethoven, 10. Tchaikovsky, 11. Schumann, 12. Paganini, 13. Romantic Concertos, 14. Bach, 15. Mozart, 16, XVIIIth Century Violinist - Composers, 17. XXth Century Composers, 18. An Invitation - List of Recordings.

Violin Companion is printed in both English and Italian. It is written with great reverence for the "King of Instruments .. the Violin" and thankfully in a non - technical style which is easy to understand.
