Echoes of a great lady violinist if the past

February 18th

The other day while I was on my way to catch my train to go home, and having left my two friends at my club. I was stopped by a man who told me he recognised my school tie, he himself had attended the same school, although many years before me.

It transpired that he knew the two friends I had just left, who had also gone to the same school. He told me he was a painter and asked what my profession was. I told him I was an historian and that my speciality was the violin. He said he had a cousin who had been a famous lady violinist. I asked him to repeat his name for me. He said his name was Fachiri, and his dead relative was Adila Fachiri(1886-1962), sister of Jelly D'Aranyi, he is as far as he is aware the last surviving member of the family who has the surname Fachiri. You never know who is passing you in the street.

Benno and Sylvia Rabinof

February 14th

"Sylvia Rabinof" wrote to me recently with some details about Benno Rabinof, her husband. Rabinof (1905-1975) was one of the greatest violinists of this century. Better known in the USA than England. He had one of the most wonderful violin sounds I have ever heard and possessed a most brilliant technique. He made very few commercial recordings, but those he did make are exceptional. He made two LPs for Decca one of which DL10101"Gypsy Violin Classics" is considered by many as one of the greatest violin recordings of all time. His violin was a very beautifull del Gesu "TheTiger" (1742) named after the design in the grain on the back. I thank Sylvia Rabinoff for her kindness in writing to me.

February 6th

Violin Land has been fortunate to acquire another rare 78 for the Roland Collection. It is a a very unusual recording of the Hungarian violinist"Tividár Nachèz"whos real name was Theodor Naschitz (1859-1939). In 1912 he recorded three single sides, two sides were of compositions of his own, Dance Tzigane Nos 1 and 2 on HMV 07992 and 07993. This one, the first of the three was of Schumann's Traumerei,on HMV 07991, He was a renowned teacher and there are many editions of major violin works which bear his fine editorial marks. He studied with Joachim in Berlin, and later with Léonard in Paris He wrote several works for the violin including a Violin Concerto op 30.
